Mary Daly passed away yesterday, Sunday morning, January 3, 2010. Her life deserves to be honored and celebrated and for this, I [...]

News articles covering the horrific murders of Allisha Royster, 23, and Lydia Steed, 31, of Baltimore, who were married recently in Boston, have a sordid and tawdry feeling about them. The word “lesbian” often features prominently in the headlines, the couple is said to have “taken in,” not a woman or a battered or [...]

The women in my father’s practice who had abortions before abortion was legal have taught me that abortion is not about families, it’s not about babies, abortion is about women’s hopes, dreams, potential…the rest of their lives. Abortion is a matter of survival for women. Abortion is a matter of survival for women.
If you can [...]

Aletha e-mailed me a couple of days ago (and I haven’t responded yet, but as always, I’ve been thinking about what you said, Aletha) and asked me something like, “Is it just me, or is everything becoming increasingly surreal?” I think she was thinking more about U.S. politics, and I agree, national politics have taken [...]

Helen built this cabin with the help of friends in the woods of West Virginia in the 1980’s. A fire in her wood stove destroyed everything. There was no insurance. Our goal is to create a financial resource for Helen as she starts to rebuild her home and her life.

It stings to be told – worse, truly realize – you’ve been privileged and are part of institutionalized racism and part of what is keeping it going.
Most good people [...]

Carla Emery as a young woman
I’ve been thinking about the women in my life who have most deeply influenced me (besides my mother, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, relatives by blood, all of whom have so deeply influenced me and who have given me so much). One of these women was Carla Emery, who died [...]
