So in the past year or so:
The subprime mortgage market in the United States tanked;
Bank stocks plummeted;
Big Six investment firm Bear Stearns tanked;
The British government seized insolvent mortgage lender Northern Rock;
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac went into receivership, taken over by the U.S. government;

It stinks, but both Obama and McCain support the bailout agreement reached shortly after midnight this morning.
According to the New York Times, the agreement would:
Bail out Wall Street at a cost of $700 billion;
Limit pay for some executives whose firms seek help;
