Bailout: The True Leaders

I said in my last post that I didn’t see any evidence of real leadership in crafting the bailout. But I am wrong, I sure did see leadership. Last weekend in researching the financial crisis, I came upon an open letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulsen drafted by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Among other things, [...]

So in the past year or so:

The subprime mortgage market in the United States tanked;
Bank stocks plummeted;
Big Six investment firm Bear Stearns tanked;
The British government seized insolvent mortgage lender Northern Rock;
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac went into receivership, taken over by the U.S. government;
The largest insurance company in the nation, and probably the world, AIG, [...]

 Call me a lazy citizen, but it is 9 am and I have not yet finished reading the 451 page bailout bill that the Senate passed last night.  But then again, I’m guessing that none of the Senators read it either.
How else to explain that suddenly on page 115 there is a section titled “Energy [...]

Kirsten Brydum
The following letter from swaneagle came through this morning on a list I’m on.  Kirsten Brydum, who was found murdered in New Orleans, was the amazing, visionary founder of the Really Really Free Market, something I’ve been meaning to blog about for a while now, but particularly recently, when there is all of this talk about money and about [...]

Consider the demographics of the people above, who just created the $700 billion bailout plan, selling all of us ordinary taxpayers down the river.  White, male and rich, save one.
Don’t anybody even try to tell me how much things have changed in the last 80, 100 years.  It’s an insult to the intelligence of all thinking [...]

It stinks, but both Obama and McCain support the bailout agreement reached shortly after midnight this morning.
According to the New York Times, the agreement would:

Bail out Wall Street at a cost of $700 billion;
Limit pay for some executives whose firms seek help;
Require the government to use its new role as owner of distressed mortgage-backed securities to [...]

During the month of September, the United States government took over mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  Lehman Brothers, an investment bank, filed for bankruptcy.  AIG, an insurance company, collapsed.  Merrill Lynch sold itself to Bank of America.  Washington Mutual Bank failed, the largest bank failure in history.  It is expected that Wachovia might be [...]

I wasn’t invited to the Capitol to discussion solutions to the Wall Street meltdown.  That was a privilege reserved for the two mainstream presidential candidates.  But had I been invited, I’d have been prepared.  I’d have been ready with my analysis and with my, I believe, good, informed, intelligent ideas, challenges and solutions to this [...]

The Washington Mutual Tower in Seattle
I just can’t get over it.
Washington Mutual, WaMu, the Seattle-based thrift that became a national powerhouse, has failed.
Since September 16, customers have withdrawn $16.7 BILLION dollars, leaving the bank weaving so precariously that Thursday, federal regulators pronounced it ”unsound” and took it over, even though Friday is normally the day they’d have taken [...]
