“TRADE”, Sex Slavery and “Fields of Shame” in Southern California
Oct 13th, 2008 by admin
Above is the trailer to a new film, Trade, put out by Lion’s Gate films and starring Kevin Kline. The film is about sex trafficking. I learned about it when I got an e-mail about Gloria Steinem making a November 5 appearance in North Carolina to endorse and support it, and went poking around to learn more.
I looked up the trailer on Youtube, it was there, and beneath it in a comment was a link to a Youtube video of a news story the commenter says was what motivated the film’s producers to make the film. That video is below. It is extremely triggering. It documents and depicts girls and women being herded into harvest fields, changing into clothes their pimps want them to wear, and men then going to the resulting “outdoor brothel” which has been set up on the spot, paying a pimp, and raping the girls and women. In all likelihood, the girls and women were smuggled into Southern California from Mexico according to authorities interviewed in the film. I say the video depicts rape, not sex, because the women were kidnapped and are being held as slaves and some are just girls. The rapes are somewhat concealed in the video by black garbage bags set around for the men’s “privacy”. The men are charged $20 for sex with a condom, $30 for sex without a condom. As Rebecca Mott has frequently reminded us, it’s up to the men whether “harm” is reduced, if, indeed, the harm of rape can be mitigated by the use of condoms in the first place.
We document and document and document the enslavement of girls and women for the purposes of rape. Below is a news video made of men in the act of this rape. It goes on and on and on anyway, day in, day out, and has for thousands of years. Undoubtedly the rapists in the film below would say they went to “prostitutes” and “paid for sex,” although, in fact, they have raped enslaved, kidnapped girls or women. Undoubtedly the rapists and pimps depicted here have mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, yet, they rape and brutalize and torture. Undoubtedly these men, if confronted, would say, “What? They got paid for it.” Because in their disordered, messed up minds, paying a woman means she can not be raped or tortured or brutalized. She sold whatever human rights she might have had, so far as they are concerned, for twenty bucks, thirty without a condom.
Until this torture, this rape, this indignity, brutality, slavery ENDS, until there is justice for girls and women on this earth, how dare anybody, especially a man, but anybody, defend prostitution.
Once again, the video below is extremely triggering.
The reporter is Anna Garcia. The news video was made in 2003. The location is Vista, California.

How much more need to be said about the sex trade until it is viewed as an abuse of women’s and girl’s human rights. That it uses torture as a means to control women and girls.
When will liberal feminists take it seriously.
See that sex trade will use any group of women and girls to get money from men who want sex with an object that has no humanity.
All men that choose to buy women and girls will not believe that it is rape, that they could be torturing, even justify murder as cleaning up the mess.
They are not violent just using goods that they have pay for.
How come so many feminists can justify and even back the men’s rights to use prostitutes.
I have had enough of being tolerate about that prostitution is separated from humans rights, and framed as choice.
Enough of men being given to use violence in brothels, in fields, on the streets, in cars, in hotels, in saunas - and it ok coz it is framed as prostitution.
Enough of men going abroad and raping girls and women - and getting away with when it is framed as prostitution.
Enough of men in groups, whether stag does, armed forces, students, businessmen raping and torturing women and girls - but it is ok coz they are prostitutes.
Enough of men knowing having sex with with an under-aged prostitute is a non-crime, it is just a business exchange.
I am mightly pissed off that prostitution is considered a debate by some feminists, when the vast majority of prostituted women and girls are being raped and tortured.
When feminists debate about the few that are happy - I cannot care when too many are trafficked, trick into prostitution, kidnap, lie to.
Why do too many feminists dismiss the rights of prostitutes, framing as an issue round sex and framing it into adult choices.
Not framing it as intense abuse of power.
Not seeing and knowing that prostitutes are made non-humans, in order for men to give themselves permission to torture.
Part of this de-humanising is the way prostitutes have to be “happy” so the men don’t feel shame or guilt.
I have had enough of excuses for prostitution.
I want it abolished, not tinker with.
I sick of women and girls being tortured, raped and murdered all the time everywhere.
I don’t understand feminism that makes excuses for men buying and selling women and girls.
I’m a sex worker and I agree that situations like this are rape. Whenever I watch a well-meaning documentary about human trafficking I’m always disturbed by the complete lack of acknowledgment that there is a market demand for rape that certain kinds of traffickers are catering to. As in this case you mention here: The men going to that field could very well go elsewhere for prostitutes who were not kidnapped and forced to be there. But the men know the women in that field don’t want to be there. They WANT to rape somebody who isn’t willing and they’ll pay somebody (the pimp) to let them do that without any legal consequences (people actually go to prison for rape, while visiting prostitutes is punished lightly if at all).

The mind boggles.
The rapes and tortures of kidnapped girls and women can be filmed and shown on the evening news, but apparently can’t be stopped.
Note too how men’s ‘privacy’ is of paramount importance. So it is okay for multiple numbers of men to commit group rape on women and girls but it is not apparently acceptable for men’s sexual organs to be shown committing these rapes. Male sexual violence against women and girls is now ‘normal and ‘entertainment’ but as always men’s ‘privacy’ must always be maintained. Meaning of course male genitals which are the body parts predominantly used when men commit rape and other forms of sexual torture against women and girls are considered so sacred they must on no account be shown for ‘entertainment’ purposes.
Yet many still refute the fact male sexual violence against women and girls is a global issue and also the fact there is a global male war being waged on women’s and girls’ bodies. This war is unceasing and has been going on for centuries only difference is now technology ensures male sexual violence is no longer hidden from sight but is now available as ‘entertainment.’ Ergo: the sex industry which incorporates pornography and prostitution. Question is? For whom is the ‘entertainment’ aimed at? Well it is aimed at both women and men. Women are being vividly reminded their sole role and existence within this world is to be routinely raped and sexually exploited by men. Men are reminded it is their supposed right of male sexual entitlement to commit multiple rapes but which are not ‘rapes’ because the female victims supposedly ‘freely choose’ to be raped by innumerable men.
I am mightly pissed off that prostitution is considered a debate by some feminists, when the vast majority of prostituted women and girls are being raped and tortured.
You’re not alone in this.
“The men going to that field could very well go elsewhere for prostitutes who were not kidnapped and forced to be there. But the men know the women in that field don’t want to be there. “
I’m not so sure about either of these assumptions. Condomless sex for $30 isn’t commonly found among unforced prostituted women, and I don’t know why the same excuses men have always made about how financially, sexually, and spiritually beneficial prostitution is for women wouldn’t rear their heads among these men as they do among other men.
I posted a comment on the 9/17 article of Samaly Mam’s book review. I hope admin will read it. I am looking for Japanese language contacts so that I can get my univ. Japanese English writing students involved, if they choose, in a letter campaign to English Language Newspapers before the end of 2009. If you know of anyone please contact me at daitoclass at yahoo.com
Why aren’t we seeing more from you on the blatant and crude sexism of Sarah Palin? Here’s another one–NSFW

If this was Hillary, the outrage would be off the walls.
Jen, spammer much? You clearly are, given that you have no clue what this blog is even about. If you’d so much as bothered to look at the recent comments on the sidebar, you’d have had an idea how many posts I have written about the DESPICABLE sexism against Sarah Palin, which I cannot STAND, which should be repugnant and a source of outrage to any feminist woman, and which has forever alienated me from women I’d have otherwise viewed as allies and sisters. Dear god, this election has disabused me of a whatever residual idealism I might have had.
Buy a clue: READ before SPEWING.
Not to mention you come into THIS THREAD about women kidnapped, raped and tortured, talking about the presidential campaign, no mention of the kidnaps, rapes and tortures of women.
You’re out of your mind.
I am so goddamn done with this election, it absolutely STINKS, and I am sick to death of how destructive it is to women. God.
Ann Bartow weighs in with a great post of her own.
