Yes, this sums up the power of women controlled, women only space. This could be whole towns and cities if we wanted this.

Hey, ceejay :).

I've yet to see the Vagina Monologues, but VM was presented at Michfest this year and I heard really good reviews.

Where there are only women, everything really is so different. It's difficult to communicate how different, or what the difference can mean for us as women, to those who have never been in woman-only space or especially who have never had any interest in it. For me and for many women and girls, woman-only spaces are life-altering in a central, crucial way.

The healing ritual of the Dome in New Orleans sounds really wonderful-- I'm so glad this was done.

Wonderful article.

I've never been to anything like this, but this is kind of how I felt when I went to "The Vagina Monologues" in the Superdome this past February. There were SOME men, but it was OVERWHELMINGLY women. I'd never seen anything like it. I'd never seen so many women anywhere - tens of thousands of us! It was OUR SPACE. The few men present were OUR guests, totally insignificant and way, way outnumbered; the night was ours. The place, usually home to Saints football games where men and their sport rule, was so different. Watching all the women walk up the many pathways around and up to the Dome, I kept thinking that there was a whole new energy there.

By the way, for those of you who remember the tragedy of the Superdome during Katrina, Eve Ensler led several days of "Vagina Monologues" related activities designed to reclaim the space from the horrors of late August and early SEptember of 2005. It closed with a cleansing and blessing of the Dome.

Let the boys play football in there again. I will still always think of the Dome as partly mine now.
